Criterion A

3D Design and Modelling - Inquiring and Analyzing

Paragraph 1:
The creator of the printer is called Johannes Gutenberg. He is a German goldsmith. The printer was called the Gutenberg press after Johannes himself. The Gutenberg press is wooden and then later metal. It was the most common printer until the 20th century. In 1440, Johannes Gutenberg created the printing press, the hand press, in which ink was turned over the elevated surface of mobile hand-set block letters kept inside a wooden form and then it was then pushed against paper. Johannes was born in 1395, at Mainz, Germany. He died at his birthplace, Mainz, in the year 1468 due to old age. He was born into a family of merchants. His father was called Friele zum Gensfleisch and his mom was Else Wirick zum Gutenberg. He started experimenting with printing in the year 1438.

Paragraph 2:
Impact printers:

Impact printers are printers that strike what ever they are printing on with ink or what ever medium they are using to form characters and/or pictures. Impact printers show much resemblance to typewriters. Here are some types of impact printers:
  1. Dot Matrix
  2. Daisy wheel
  3. Drum printer
  4. Chain printer
  5. Line printer
Non-impact printers:

Non-impact printers are the polar opposite of impact printers, hence the name non-impact. They are quicker and quieter than the impact because it has less parts. Some examples include:
  1.  Laser printer
  2. Inkjet printer

Paragraph 3:

Dot Matrix Printer:
- It was invented by the digital equipment corporation in 1970.
- Dot matrix printing is a kind of printer which uses a print head that moves back-and-forth, on the page and prints by collision, hitting an ink-soaked ribbon against the paper.

Advantages
  • The are cheap and easy to find in market places.
  • They tolerate different conditions
Disadvantages
  • The output isn't high resolution

Ink Jet
- Hewlett-Packard, and Lexmark created the inkjet in 1979.
- Inkjet printers are a kind of printer that reconstructs a picture by forcing droplets of ink onto the medium.

 Advantages
  • Cheap
  • Easy use
  • Relatively fast
  • Quieter than Dot Martix
 Disadvantages
  •  Can't use highlighters on printouts
  • Not as fast as laser printers
Video:

Laser Printer
- Gary Starkweather created the printer in 1969
- It creates high-quality graphics by moving a laser back and forth consistently.
- The tech behind it:
Toner Cartridge Components
EP Photosensitive Drum
 Erase Lamp
 Primary Corona Wire
Toner
Transfer Corona
Fuser
Power Supplies
Turning Gears
Motherboard
Ozone Filter
Sensors
Switches

Advantages
  • Quick
  • Efficienty
  • User friendly and easy
  • features self printing
Disadvantages
  • Alot more expensive than other printers

Thermal
- It was invented in 1972
Advantages
  • Cheap
  • Easy use
  • Quiet
  • Doesn't get to hot to easily
Disadvantages
  • When it gets to hot, it will printer excess ink
  • This means you will have to keep buying ink cartages

Daisy Wheel
- It was invented by David S. Lee
- It was invented in 1969

Advantages
  • High quality

Disadvantages
  • Very Noisy
  • Slow
  • Have to change the ribbon a lot

Design Solution

As part as my MYP Design class project I have designed something on Tinker CAD. Computer Aided Design is a system to create 2D or 3D shapes. Tinker CAD is an app that uses this system. We have been using in school to create object like a ship. On it I created a Design of something else. An LG Smartphone.
I own an LG Smartphone, back when it looked like a blackberry. I have broken 2 phones before so that’s the only phone they trusted me with. Though I am getting a new one, there are still some modifications I wish for. Things like touchscreen and emojis. I create it with inspirations from Samsung, I-phones and the current versions of LG Smartphones.
It has a dark magenta cover with a yellow star. Blue phone background with 8 apps: Games, Facebook, Twitter, Camera, Calendar, Logs, Contacts, Messages. Two buttons for phone calls. One red and one green. The games logo is represented by a pacman, The calendar by the date, Twitter by a T, Facebook by an F, Camera by a camera, logs by a phone, messages by an exclamation mark and question mark, and contacts by a person. On the cover, there is a hole for the camera and a button for exiting the current page.
The overall cost will be $800. The selling cost will be $500 but the costs for the equipment would cost approximately $300.
The target audience will be teenagers, who are the ones to tend to own fancy phones. They want all the fancy equipment like twitter, tinder, tumblr, Facebook, Instagram. Women tend to prefer Smartphones to others. And my phone has a magenta cover which boys wouldn’t like. People from middle class and upper class will by my phone because of the price.
It has been stated that phones reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and stop the use of unsustainable materials in their products and packaging.
A smartphone can call people, messages friends, take pictures, play games. Its main purpose is to help the customers’ needs.
24 Hours of labor it takes to manufacture the phone, over 5 days
There will be 25 parts needed, Like the Iphone. iPhone 4S Display Assembly and iPhone 4S Replacement Battery are some
It is user friendly and has an emergency call option and an app for health however I didn’t include in the design.
It should be 6 inchs in length and 3 inchs in width.
